Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry in Bolton, ON

Many adults struggle with going to see the dentist because they are afraid to get care. This does not make them weak and is actually a common reaction to dental or medical treatment. If you or a loved one struggle to sit through regular appointments, speak with us to learn about our sedation dentistry in Bolton, ON.

Levels of Care

When discussing sedation dentistry, it is important to know the different levels of sedation used during treatment. Each one affects how lucid a patient is and how much they can interact with the people around them during care. At South Hill Dental, we use the following:

  • Nitrous Oxide(Laughing Gas)
  • Oral Sedation
  • IV Twilight Sedation

A minimal level of sedation uses just enough medication to calm you without affecting your level of consciousness. You will still be aware of what is going on around you and can speak and interact with our staff like normal.

Under moderate sedation, you are more affected by the medication. You are calm and relaxed and might have gaps in your memory during treatment. It is common for patients to slur their words.

When under the influence of deep sedation, you will be at the edge of consciousness. Most patients at this stage do not remember any part of treatment and will need help getting home aftercare until the effects of the medication wear off.

Finally, general anesthesia is used to render a patient unconscious. At this point, you are unaware of what is happening around you and will wake up a little disoriented. This stage is recommended only during surgeries or when someone has an intense reaction of fear and anxiety to dental care.

Who Needs Sedated Treatment?

Sedation dentistry is reserved for individuals who struggle with anxiety, fear, or sensory discomfort when visiting the dentist. Individuals who would like this type of care need to inform our office in advance and give a complete list of all medications or drugs one is taking. This includes illegal substances.

Our staff needs to know to ensure the sedatives do not interact with anything you are currently taking.
